The short answer

Who approves a driveway and grading work around Monticello, GA?

A driveway onto GA 11, 16, 83 or 212 around Monticello needs a GDOT permit from District 2's Area 6 office, which covers Jasper, Baldwin, Putnam and Wilkinson counties. Grading must keep runoff and traffic off any septic field, or the septic approval can be voided. We grade the pad and build the drive with both in mind.↗↗

The Monticello story

Four state highways out of one courthouse square

Monticello is where GA 11, 16, 83 and 212 all come together, and SR 16 runs 17 miles east to Eatonton. So plenty of lots near town front a state highway. GDOT requires a permit before any construction in its right-of-way, and residential drives are applied for at the area office, which for Jasper is Area 6.↗↗↗

Jasper's two largest soil map units, Lloyd clay loam and Pacolet sandy clay loam on 6 to 15 percent eroded slopes, cover about 69,700 acres between them. They are the reason a drive here needs a shaped, crowned subgrade and enough stone: clay loam that has lost its topsoil drains poorly at the surface and softens under wheels in a wet winter.↗

Lot size works in your favor here. The county's joint plan ties Shady Dale's development density to lots big enough to hold septic, and on a larger county parcel there's usually room to swing the drive and pad wide of the tank and field rather than squeezing past them.↗

On a long gravel lane, the soil ratings below are why we spend money on the base and the ditches before the top stone. A Jasper drive that sheds water stays put; one that holds it in wheel ruts is back to bare clay by spring.↗

On the record

  • GDOT's area office list places Jasper County in District 2, Area 6, with Baldwin, Putnam and Wilkinson (478-445-5130).↗
  • Lloyd clay loam and Pacolet sandy clay loam on 6 to 15 percent eroded slopes are Jasper County's two largest soil map units, together about 69,700 acres.↗
  • GA 11, 16, 83 and 212 meet at the center of Monticello; SR 16 runs 17 miles east to Eatonton.↗
  • NRCS rates only about 580 acres of Jasper's major soils free of limits for local roads and streets, against roughly 167,900 somewhat limited and 65,200 very limited.↗
  • The Lloyd soil mapped at Monticello's center is rated somewhat limited for roads because of low strength, the soft-subgrade problem that shows up as ruts.↗
  • On unpaved roads and trails, about 52,100 acres of the county carry a severe erosion hazard rating and 159,400 acres a moderate one.↗

Pad and driveway, in the order we build them

  1. 01

On a state route, get the GDOT residential driveway permit through the area office before cutting into the shoulder or ditch.↗

  2. 02

Design a side-drain pipe under a drive on state right-of-way for the 25-year storm, unless the pipe upstream is built to a lesser standard.↗

  3. 03

Have utilities located before any entrance or pad work; a request after 4:30 p.m. rolls to the next business day.↗

  4. 04

Hold the drive and parking at least 5 feet from the drain field, and never across it.↗

  5. 05

Grade so roof water and drive runoff go around the septic field, not through it.↗

On state right-of-way, GDOT has driveway and side-drain pipes designed for the 25-year storm in most cases, so the pipe is part of the permit.

How far does my driveway need to be from the septic field?

Georgia keeps absorption fields at least 5 feet from drives and hardscape, and no part of the field may carry traffic.

Can grading the yard after the septic inspection cause problems?

Yes. Grading or filling after final inspection that may affect the system voids the county's approval.

Why does Jasper County clay make driveways rut?

Much of the county is eroded Lloyd and Pacolet clay loam on 6 to 15 percent slopes; without a crowned, drained subgrade and stone, it softens when wet.
