The short answer

Does Siloam, GA have sewer?

No. Siloam's town water system serves about 183 connections from wells, but EPA lists no municipal wastewater permit there; the only Clean Water Act entries belong to a clay company's quarry. Homes are on septic permitted by Greene County Environmental Health in Greensboro. We install and repair those systems and do the grading and clearing around them.↗↗↗

The Siloam story

A crossroads town where the clay is the local industry

Siloam started in the 1840s as Smyrna and took its present name when a post office opened in 1871. Today it is a crossroads: SR 15 is Main Street, running seven miles northwest to Greensboro and five and a half south to White Plains; SR 77 runs north to Union Point; and I-20 brushes the north side of town at Exit 138. Town hall is at 4000 Hwy 77 South, and the private Nathanael Greene Academy uses the town's 1929 red-brick high school.↗↗↗

The only industry on EPA's water-permit rolls in Siloam is the Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Company's quarry. That says plenty about the ground. NRCS maps the town center as Pacolet sandy loam on 6 to 15 percent slopes, moderately eroded: well-drained red clay subsoil over soft weathered rock that starts about three feet down.↗↗↗

Pacolet drains well, but on those slopes the work is in the grading. Georgia's manual bars fields on slopes over 25 percent without a soil classifier's special study, and it requires the soil evaluation and perc tests to be redone if cuts or fill change the depth of a planned field. Cutting a house pad first and asking about septic second is the expensive order on a Siloam hillside.↗

On the record

  • EPA ECHO lists no municipal wastewater permit in Siloam; the only Clean Water Act entries belong to the Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Company's Siloam quarry.↗
  • The NRCS map unit at Siloam's Census centroid is Pacolet sandy loam, 6 to 15 percent slopes, moderately eroded, rated somewhat limited for septic absorption fields.↗

Sewer or septic?

Sewer or septic in Siloam?

With no wastewater plant on record, each Siloam home treats its own sewage. Because most of town is on the water system, the Greene County Board of Health's smaller minimum applies: 0.75 acre on public water, against 1.5 acres for a lot on a private well.↗↗

Median year homes were built

1978

Typical house here is about 48 years old — and so is its original sewer or septic line.

Housing era

A third of Siloam's homes are manufactured

44 of Siloam's 136 housing units are mobile homes, and the median home was built in 1978. When an older single-wide gives way to a bigger double-wide, the bedroom count usually goes up, and Georgia sizes tanks by bedrooms: 1,000 gallons for up to four, plus 250 for each one beyond.↗↗

That is the moment to check the old system. A tank and field sized for a two-bedroom home in the 1970s may need a repair permit and more field line before the new home moves in.
