The Woodville story

A rail-stop town with a wet bottom in the middle

Woodville began as Beeman, a stop on the rail line a few miles above Union Point, and the name it took likely comes from the wood loaded onto trains there. It was incorporated in 1911. Today it lines SR 77, Dogwood Road, four and a half miles north of Union Point, eight south of Maxeys and nine northeast of Greensboro, with city hall at 1001 East Peachtree Avenue.↗↗↗

The soil survey point at Woodville's center does not land on upland clay. It lands on Chewacla silt loam, frequently flooded, which NRCS rates very limited for septic fields. Chewacla is a floodplain soil, somewhat poorly drained, with a water table that rises to 6 to 24 inches below the surface from November through April.↗↗

Georgia's manual says areas subject to frequent flooding should not be used for absorption fields. In practice, a Woodville septic job starts by finding the higher, better-drained ground on the lot and putting the field there, sometimes with a pump tank to get effluent uphill from a house that sits lower.↗

On the record

  • A search of EPA's ECHO database returns no Clean Water Act facilities at all for Woodville.↗
  • The NRCS map unit at Woodville's Census centroid is Chewacla silt loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes, frequently flooded, rated very limited for septic absorption fields.↗

Sewer or septic?

Sewer or septic in Woodville?

Being on the city's water system helps a Woodville lot. Greene County's Board of Health requires 0.75 acre for a septic lot on public water, with 25,500 square feet usable, versus 1.5 acres where a private well is needed.↗

Woodville also sits on one of Greene County's drainage divides. Land west of a line through Woodville, Union Point and White Plains drains to the Upper Oconee and Lake Oconee; land east of it splits between the Savannah basin's Little River and the Upper Ogeechee.↗
