Is Union Point, GA on sewer or septic?
Both. Union Point runs its own wastewater plant on South Hillard Street, so much of town is sewered, while farms and homesites past the city lines use septic permitted by Greene County Environmental Health. A Class Septic Services installs and repairs septic systems and drain fields, lays sewer laterals and clears and grades lots around Union Point.↗↗

The Union Point story
A town built at a rail junction, east of the lake
Union Point takes its name from the joining of two rail lines, and the town was laid out in 1834 when the railroad reached the spot. The Georgia Legislature made it a city in 1904. Between those dates a short branch called the Union Point & White Plains Railroad ran about 13 miles south from here to White Plains, from 1889 until it was abandoned in 1927.↗↗
The roads still meet here too. US 278 comes through as Lamb Avenue, seven miles from Greensboro and eleven from Crawfordville. GA 77 heads north 23 miles to Lexington and south five miles to I-20 at Siloam, and GA 44 angles northeast 22 miles to Washington. South of the interstate, GA 77 continues to GA 16 at Shoulderbone, the road that carries on to Sparta and Lake Sinclair's east side.↗↗
Lake Oconee is the money end of Greene County, and Union Point is its quiet east end. The lake shore lies west of Greensboro; land around Union Point is pasture, timber and family acreage, and the 2020 census counted every resident of the town as rural. Owners here are more likely to be replacing a tired tank behind a pre-war house, or cutting in a homesite on inherited land, than building a lake estate.↗↗
Sewer or septic?
Inside the city plant's reach, and past it
Like Greensboro, Union Point runs its own municipal wastewater plant. EPA's records list the Union Point Water Pollution Control Plant under permit GA0025429. That permit's stated term ran out on August 31, 2025, and EPA now shows it as administratively continued, which keeps the plant operating under the old terms while the state works on renewal.↗
The city has not published a sewer service map or its tap fees, so the right first question on any lot is a call to City Hall. A house on a street with a main may be required to tie in; a house a mile out on GA 77 almost certainly has a tank, and it falls to the county health office.↗
How to tell which one you have
- A City of Union Point sewer charge on the water bill means you are tied in.
- Greene County Environmental Health can tell you whether a septic permit is on file for the address.
- No sewer line on the bill means a tank and drain field, on file with Greene County Environmental Health.

Housing era
The oldest houses we work around in Greene
Union Point's median home is older than Greensboro's, and nearly a quarter of its houses went up before 1940. That age shows underground. Clay and cast-iron house drains crack and settle, original laterals were laid shallow, and where a lot was never sewered the tank may be a site-built block box with no record of where its field runs.↗
Many of those houses sit inside the National Register district between Lamb Avenue and Hendry Street. Listing does not stop a septic or sewer repair, but tidy trenching, careful spoil handling and putting the yard back the way it was matter more on a street where the porches are the point.↗

From septic letter to backfill in Greene County
- 01
Ask the Environmental Health Manager (706-453-4471) for a septic approval letter or soil evaluation; the county's building office will not issue a permit that relies on septic without it.↗
- 02
Confirm the parcel clears the Board of Health minimum: three-quarters of an acre if it has public water, an acre and a half if it will be on a well.↗
- 03
Add an erosion plan and land disturbance permit if the disturbed area tops an acre, sits within 200 feet of state waters, or is part of a larger development.↗
- 04
Install the tank and field, then leave everything uncovered until the county inspects and approves it in writing.↗
Soil & terrain
Cecil clay on the Oconee-Ogeechee divide
The soil mapped at the center of town is Cecil gravelly sandy loam on 2 to 6 percent slopes, already moderately eroded, and NRCS rates it somewhat limited for absorption fields. Across Greene County, roughly 38 percent of the surveyed ground rates very limited and most of the rest somewhat limited.↗
Union Point also sits right on a watershed line. The county drains west to the Oconee and Lake Oconee on one side of a line through Woodville, Union Point and White Plains, and east and south toward the Little River, the Savannah and the Ogeechee on the other. Which way a lot sheds water matters when placing a field or a French drain.↗
