The short answer

Is Buckhead, GA (Morgan County) on sewer or septic?

Septic. Morgan County's Buckhead runs a small town water system, about 125 connections on groundwater, but EPA lists no municipal wastewater permit there. Homes in town and the Lake Oconee lots that carry Buckhead 30625 addresses use septic permitted by Morgan County Environmental Health in Madison. We install and repair those systems and clear and grade lake lots.↗↗↗

The Buckhead story

Two Buckheads in one ZIP code

There is the town: 194 people on less than a square mile, incorporated in 1908, a mile north of I-20 at the Seven Islands Road exit and seven miles from Madison. Tradition says early hunters named it by nailing a buck's head to a tree. Its neighbors on the Clean Water Act rolls are a Martin Marietta quarry on Seven Islands Road, a concrete plant and a dairy, not a sewer plant.↗↗

Then there is the lake. Sugar Creek Marina at 353 Parks Mill Road, Blue Springs Marina on Blue Springs Drive and the Swords boat ramp on Blue Springs Road all carry Buckhead 30625 addresses, on the upper end of Lake Oconee. Morgan County's plan counts about 25 miles of lake shoreline along its southeastern edge, and the same plan says most unincorporated land has no water or sewer lines, so houses there pair a well with septic.↗↗

The two need different work. In town it is replacing tired tanks and fields behind older houses and mobile homes. On the lake it is fitting a system onto a sloping wooded lot without crossing Georgia Power's line, and moving dirt without putting it in the cove.

On the record

  • EPA ECHO lists no municipal wastewater permit for Buckhead; its Clean Water Act entries are a Martin Marietta quarry on Seven Islands Road, a concrete plant and a dairy.↗
  • Sugar Creek Marina (353 Parks Mill Road) and Blue Springs Marina (1271 Blue Springs Drive) on Lake Oconee both use Buckhead, GA 30625 addresses.↗

Lake lot rules that shape a Buckhead septic job

Georgia's septic rules set the first lines on the site plan: a tank at least 25 feet from the lake and an absorption field at least 50 feet from its normal water level. Georgia Power adds its own: no mechanical clearing, grubbing or change to the land contour inside the 25-foot shoreline buffer or on its project land without written approval, and drainage pipes must stop at the project boundary and turn into swales, French drains or dry creek beds.↗↗↗

Put together on a narrow, sloping Lake Oconee lot, that often pushes the field uphill toward the road, which means a pump tank, or onto a drip or aerobic system where the soil is thin. We plan the clearing, the driveway and the septic system as one job so equipment never has to cross the finished field.

  • Tank: 25 ft from the lake; absorption field: 50 ft from normal water level.↗
  • No mechanical clearing in Georgia Power's 25-ft buffer without written approval.↗
