What does it take to grade a lot and build a driveway in Gray, GA?
A driveway onto a Jones County road needs a county driveway permit, which costs $35 through Planning and Zoning, and Public Works decides whether a culvert goes under it. State highways like US 129 need a GDOT permit instead. A Class Septic Services grades the pad and drive and keeps both off the septic field.↗↗

The Jones County driveway permit, step by step
- 01
Fill out the county's driveway application and pay $35 to Planning and Zoning, in person or online.↗
- 02
Stake or flag the spot where the driveway will meet the road.↗
- 03
Public Works visits to decide whether a culvert is needed to carry ditch water under the driveway. If not, the permit is done.↗
- 04
If a culvert is needed, Public Works prices the labor and materials; once that fee is paid, the county installs the culvert.↗
The Gray story
County road or state route? It changes who signs off
US 129 runs straight through the middle of Gray, and the county is crossed by state routes 11, 18, 22, 44, 49 and 57, plus the Fall Line Freeway. A new driveway onto any of those is not a county matter: GDOT requires its own permit before any work in state highway right-of-way, and residential applications go to the GDOT District Area Office.↗↗↗↗
For everything else, the paved and dirt county roads that reach most rural tracts, the Jones County form governs. Its culvert step matters on the low side of any road ditch. A drive that dams the ditch sends storm water across the gravel, and in Davidson clay that turns a new drive into ruts by the first spring.↗
More about Gray
Grading around a septic system without voiding it
On most lots outside Gray's sewer, the driveway, the house pad and the septic field compete for the same ground. The rules are clear about who wins. No part of an absorption field may sit under pavement or carry vehicle traffic; only solid schedule 40 pipe can.↗
Order matters as well. If cuts or fill will change the depth of a field that has not been installed yet, DPH requires the soil evaluation and perc tests to be done again after the grading. And once the county has made its final inspection, later grading or filling that affects the system voids the approval. We grade the pad and drive with the septic layout in hand so neither of those happens.↗↗
Davidson, the soil mapped at the center of Gray, carries a heavy red clay subsoil. Rolled at the right moisture it makes a solid base for a drive; worked wet, it ruts under the first concrete truck. We build fill up in thin compacted layers and time the stone so the drive is capped before the wet months.↗
