The short answer

What does grading and driveway work in Eatonton, GA involve?

Grading and driveway prep around Eatonton means shaping Putnam's red clay so water runs away from the house, building a stable base, and getting the drive onto the road legally. A driveway onto US 129/441, GA 16 or GA 44 needs a GDOT permit from its District 2 area office. On septic lots, the drive stays off the field.↗↗↗

The Eatonton story

Four state highways, a lot of red clay, and every drop going to a lake

Eatonton is a crossroads town. US 129 and US 441 meet here and form the city's western edge, GA 16 heads west to Monticello and GA 44 runs northeast toward Lake Oconee and Greensboro. A lot that fronts any of those is a GDOT driveway permit, filed at the area office, before the apron gets poured or graveled.↗↗

In town, drainage is already a public problem. The city won a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant in October 2020 for street and drainage work in the South Jefferson Street neighborhood. A yard graded to dump water on the neighbor, or into a street ditch, is the private version of the same problem.↗

More about Eatonton

Grading around a septic system, and around the lake

The most expensive grading mistake in this county is the one made after the septic inspection. Georgia says grading, filling or construction on the lot after the health department's final approval that may affect the system voids that approval. If the plan calls for a fill pad or a regraded side yard, it has to be settled before the field is covered, not after.↗

The reverse is true too: if cuts will change the depth of a proposed absorption field, the soil evaluation and perc tests must be redone. On a sloping Putnam lake lot, we grade the house pad and drive with the field area roped off.↗

Down at the water, Georgia Power's Oconee rules say drainage pipes can't cross its property; they stop at the project boundary and hand off to a swale, French drain or dry creek bed. A long driveway's culvert outlet gets planned with that in mind.↗

The most expensive grading mistake in this county is the one made after the septic inspection.

Our order of work on an Eatonton driveway and pad

  1. 01

Mark the house, septic tank, field and repair area first, so the drive and pad stay at least 5 feet off the field.

  2. 02

On a state route, file the residential driveway application with the GDOT area office before touching the right-of-way.↗

  3. 03

Strip topsoil, cut and fill to grade, and compact the clay subgrade in lifts.

  4. 04

Set the culvert and ditch, then lay and crown the stone base so water sheds to the sides.

  5. 05

Seed and straw every bare shoulder before the next rain.

Do I need a permit for a driveway onto US 441 near Eatonton?

Yes. GDOT requires a permit before any construction in a state highway right-of-way, and residential applications go to the district area office; Putnam is in District 2, Area 6.

Can my new driveway cross over the septic field?

No. Drives must stay at least 5 feet from an absorption field, and no part of a field may carry vehicle traffic or pavement.

We want to regrade the yard after the septic was approved. Is that a problem?

It can be. Grading or filling after the final inspection that may affect the system voids the health department's approval, so talk to us before the machine shows up.

Where can a driveway culvert on a Lake Oconee lot drain?

Not across Georgia Power land. The pipe ends at the project boundary and transitions to a swale, French drain or dry creek bed.

How big does the pipe under a state-route driveway have to be?

GDOT sizes driveway and side-drain pipes on its right-of-way for the 25-year storm, unless the pipe upstream is designed for less; the area office sets the final size.
