The short answer

What does grading and driveway prep involve in Madison, GA?

A new Madison driveway onto a city street needs the city's $75 curb-cut and driveway permit, and a drive onto a state route such as US 441 or US 278 needs a GDOT permit. The grade must shed rain from the house and keep traffic off any septic field. A Class Septic grades lots and builds driveway bases.↗↗

The Madison story

A ridge-top town where every drive runs downhill somewhere

Madison sits on a ridge at about 691 feet. The south side drains to Sugar Creek, the north side runs by Mill Branch to Hard Labor Creek, and the southwest corner sheds into Little Indian Creek. A driveway in town almost always runs downhill one way or the other, which makes the crown, the ditch and the culvert at the street the parts of the job that matter.↗

The city treats runoff as a utility. Its fee schedule bills stormwater by equivalent residential units, with a single-family home counted as two, and charges engineer review on grading and drainage plans by the sheet. Bigger grading jobs get a land disturbance inspection.↗

Three federal highways cross town: US 441 and US 129 north to Athens and south to Eatonton, and US 278 east to Greensboro and west toward Covington. A new drive onto any state route needs a GDOT permit before any work in the right-of-way, and side-drain pipes on state right-of-way are designed for the 25-year storm.↗↗↗

Soil & terrain

Subgrade: eroded clay and wet winters

Morgan County's biggest soil unit is severely eroded Lloyd clay loam on 6 to 15 percent slopes, and that is what most rural driveways get built on. With the topsoil long gone, the subgrade is red clay that compacts well at the right moisture and ruts badly when it is wet.↗

Where Hard Labor soils show up, the perched water table can sit 18 to 30 inches down from January to April. A drive graded across that ground in a dry fall needs stone and drainage in place before the first wet winter, or it pumps mud through the gravel.↗

More about Madison

Grading around a septic system

On county lots the driveway and the septic field compete for the same flat ground. No part of an absorption field can sit under pavement or carry vehicles, so the drive and turnaround are routed around it, and the yard is shaped so runoff from the drive and the roof goes past the field, not onto it.↗

Order matters too. If grading or cuts will change the depth of a proposed field, the soil evaluation and perc tests have to be redone, and grading over an approved system can void its approval. We grade with the septic layout in hand.↗↗

On the Morgan County shore of Lake Oconee, Georgia Power allows no mechanical grading or leveling on its land, so final grades stop at the project boundary.↗
