What should I know about land clearing around Monticello, GA?
Jasper County is inside Georgia EPD's May 1 to September 30 open-burning ban, so summer clearing debris around Monticello gets hauled, chipped or ground instead of burned. From October on, land-clearing burns still need a Georgia Forestry Commission permit. Creek buffers and erosion rules apply near water. We clear the build area and handle the debris.↗↗

The Monticello story
Forest county: clearing a homesite in Jasper
Jasper is wooded country. Part of the Oconee National Forest, the only national forest in Georgia's Piedmont, lies in the county, and the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge reaches into it as well. With that much forest around, a homesite out here often starts as woods.↗↗
Clearing for a house is not clearing for timber. We take the trees and stumps where the house, drive, well and septic system will go, keep the good shade trees that don't need to come out, and leave the field area as undisturbed as possible so its soil still drains when the permit inspector arrives.
Northwest of Monticello, Lake Jackson spreads over 4,750 acres with 135 miles of shoreline. Lots on its Jasper shore have Georgia Power's project boundary at the water and a 50-foot construction setback behind it, so any clearing near the lake is planned around both.↗↗
On the record
- Jasper, Morgan and Putnam (Northeast District) and Jones (West Central District) are among the 54 counties under EPD's 2026 May 1 to September 30 open-burning ban.↗
- Part of the Oconee National Forest, the only national forest in Georgia's Piedmont, lies in Jasper County.↗
- Lake Jackson, impounded by Lloyd Shoals Dam, covers 4,750 acres with 135 miles of shoreline.↗

Planning a clearing job around the calendar
If you're clearing in summer, plan on hauling. EPD's alternatives during the ban are chipping, composting, or trucking debris to a grinding and composting operation or an inert or C&D landfill. Stumps generally ride out on the dump truck either way.↗
From October through April, a permitted burn can cut hauling on a big wooded tract. Burns have to stay 25 feet from woods and 50 feet from structures, run between sunrise and sunset, be attended the whole time, and start with the Forestry Commission permit.↗↗
Pulling stumps is digging, so it gets a Georgia 811 ticket like any other excavation, especially along a road frontage where power and water may run.↗
If you're clearing in summer, plan on hauling.

Do I need a land disturbance permit to clear a lot near Monticello?
Not for under an acre unless it's part of a larger plan or within 200 feet of the bank of state waters.

How near Murder Creek or another stream can the machines work?
Georgia keeps a 25-foot buffer along the banks of state waters, so clearing stops short of it.

I have a Lake Jackson lot in Jasper County. What's different?
Georgia Power's guidelines keep new construction outside its project boundary and at least 50 feet from the shoreline, so clearing near the water is limited.

What does clearing an acre cost?
HomeAdvisor's 2026 range is $500 to $2,000 for a lightly wooded acre and $3,600 to $5,600 for heavily forested ground.
