The Gray story

Burning debris in Jones County: when you can and when you can't

Jones is one of the 54 Georgia counties under EPD's summer ban on open burning, which covers yard and land-clearing debris from May 1 through September 30 every year. The 2026 ban ended on September 30, so burning is back on the table this fall and winter, with conditions, until the next ban starts May 1.↗

Outside the ban, a hand-piled pile of natural yard debris no longer needs a permit, but a land-clearing burn still does. That permit comes from the Georgia Forestry Commission, by phone at 1-800-GA-TREES, online, or through the local GFC county office, and it is good only for the day it is issued. Machine-piled clearing debris can fall under EPD's land-clearing rules and may require an air curtain destructor.↗

Even a legal burn has to sit 25 feet from woods and brush and 50 feet from any structure, run between sunrise and sunset, and be attended the whole time. Household garbage is never burnable in Georgia.↗

  • Georgia Forestry Commission burn permits are valid only for the day they are issued.↗

More about Gray

Where the debris goes when it doesn't burn

Jones County does not run a landfill; all of its solid waste is trucked to landfills outside the county. The county's limb pile at 153 Overland Way takes natural vegetation, trees and shrubs, but it is for private residents only, with no commercial debris accepted, and its centers turn away dirt, rock and concrete.↗

So on a real clearing job, debris gets one of three treatments: burned on site outside the ban season with a GFC permit, ground or chipped and spread, or loaded and hauled to a grinding operation or an inert landfill. EPD lists those same alternatives to burning.↗

Stumps deserve their own plan. Any that sit where the septic tank will go have to come out completely, because state rules require tank backfill free of stumps, large stones and voids. Stumps buried under a driveway or house pad rot and leave soft spots, so we pull them rather than bury them.↗

On the record

  • Jones County's Overland Way limb pile accepts natural vegetation, trees and shrubs from private citizens only; commercial debris is refused.↗
  • Jones County does not operate a landfill; its solid waste is transported to nearby landfills.↗
