The short answer

What does land clearing near Milledgeville, GA involve?

Clearing near Milledgeville means removing trees, brush and stumps while keeping the 25-foot buffer on creeks and lake arms, and, on Lake Sinclair lease lots, showing Georgia Power which trees 4 inches and up will come down. Baldwin County is outside the summer burn ban, but land-clearing burns still need a Forestry Commission permit. We clear and haul.↗↗

The Milledgeville story

Two kinds of ground, two kinds of clearing

North of town, on the Lake Sinclair side, clearing is surgical. Baldwin's 2023 plan describes the shore as houses packed densely together, and on a wooded Sinclair lot the neighbors' docks and decks are close enough that every tree that falls, every pile that burns and every bare slope that washes is noticed. Georgia Power wants a site and landscaping plan showing the trees coming out of the building footprint and the driveway.↗↗

Creekfront lots inside lake communities add the state buffer. A 2.1-acre creekfront homesite on Falls Lane in Baldwin County was listed; on a lot like that, the 25-foot strip along the creek stays wooded and the clearing plan works back from it.↗↗

South of town, below the Fall Line, the work opens up: pine tracts and old fields on the flatter, sandier upper Coastal Plain ground that covers the county's southern part. There, clearing is about volume, stumps and getting debris off the property efficiently.↗

On the record

  • A 2.1-acre creekfront homesite on Falls Lane, Baldwin County, was listed with 2025 property tax of $876.↗

More about Milledgeville

Burn, chip or haul?

Because Baldwin is outside the summer ban, a permitted land-clearing burn is possible in any month, which is a real difference from Putnam County across the lake. Whether it is a good idea is another question on a crowded shoreline lot. EPD's own list of alternatives runs to chipping, composting and hauling debris to a grinding operation or an inert or construction-debris landfill.↗↗

Stumps get special care near a future septic site. Tank backfill has to be free of stumps, voids and large stones, so we grub the tank and field areas clean instead of burying root balls nearby.↗

  • For hand-piled yard debris, no GFC permit is needed outside a ban, but the fire must be 25 feet from woods, 50 feet from structures, lit between sunrise and sunset and attended throughout.↗
