How is a failing drain field replaced off Twin Bridges Road?
Putnam County Environmental Health permits the replacement. The new trenches must sit 50 feet from Lake Sinclair's normal water level and 100 feet from wells, and on a Georgia Power lease lot the field and its repair area must stay inside the lease. A Class Septic Services lays out, digs and rebuilds the field to pass county inspection.↗↗

The Twin Bridges Lake Sinclair story
Thirty-five years of fields between the landing and the lease lots
Twin Bridges Landing has been the hub of this end of the lake since the Young family developed it in 1988, with two ramps, a gas dock and a store. A lot of the houses around it are nearly as old. A 1991 lakefront home on Shelton Lane, minutes from the landing, sits on 0.67 acre with public water and a septic tank. Fields from that era are reaching the end of their working life.↗↗
Replacing one is harder than building the first. The original trenches took the best ground, and the yard has since gained a driveway, a boathouse path and maybe a neighbor's well across the line. The new field still has to clear 50 feet from the water and 100 from any well, and Georgia's manual expects a full replacement area to exist, not just room for one more trench.↗↗
On Dennis Station Road, where houses sit on Georgia Power lease lots, the lease line closes the last escape route. You cannot borrow a strip of the project land for a new field. If the soil inside the lease will not take conventional trenches, the answer becomes a pump to higher ground on the lot, or a drip field that fits tighter spaces.↗↗
Warning signs
A Twin Bridges field that is giving out
Seeing two or more of these? Call before it gets worse.
- 1. Soggy grass or seepage over the trenches days after rain stops
- 2. Sewage odor drifting across the yard toward the dock
- 3. Lush green stripes in an otherwise brown August lawn
- 4. Drains that slow down every time the house fills with guests
- 5. Algae blooming along your own stretch of shoreline
Soil & terrain
Clay that rewards dry-weather digging
Twin Bridges sits in the Baldwin-Jones-Putnam soil survey, where NRCS rates roughly 381,500 acres of major soils very limited for septic fields and about 245,600 somewhat limited. Davidson clay leads the survey and drains when undisturbed; steep Wilkes ground near the coves does not. Georgia's manual forbids trenching non-sandy soils while wet, so replacements here get scheduled around the weather.↗↗

- 02
Apply for a repair permit; replacement fields are permitted and inspected just like new systems.↗
- 03
Measure 50 feet from the normal water level and 100 feet from every well, then keep the layout inside the lease line.↗
- 04
Build trenches no wider than 36 inches on at least 7-foot centers, and leave them open for the inspector.↗

FAQ
Twin Bridges drain field questions
Straight answers, with the rule or record behind them. Still unsure? Call and ask the crew that digs.
(678) 863-5620Can my replacement field go on Georgia Power's strip by the water?
No. On a lease lot the system and its repair area must stay entirely on the leased lot and leave the project boundary undisturbed.

My neighbor has a well. Does that limit my field?
Yes. Absorption trenches must be 100 feet from any well or spring, wherever the property line falls.

How long will Putnam take to approve a repair?
A complete application must be approved or disapproved within 20 days under the state rule.
Can I enlarge the house while the field is being replaced?
Not if it sits within 50 feet of the shore or inside the project boundary; Georgia Power holds those houses 'as is.'

Is drip an option if trenches won't fit my lease lot?
Often. Drip lines run shallow along the contour after aerobic pretreatment and can fit ground that trenches cannot, though they still need a full replacement area.

Where is the Putnam septic office?
Environmental Health shares the county health department building on Putnam Drive in Eatonton, open weekdays 8 to 4:30.

Why do you wait for dry weather to dig?
Georgia's manual bars trenching clay soils when wet, because the walls smear and compact permanently and the new field would fail early.
