The short answer

What does drain field repair or installation involve around Madison, GA?

Around Madison, a new or replacement drain field is permitted and inspected by Morgan County Environmental Health. The trenches have to fit the soil, keep 100 feet from wells and 50 feet from the lake or a creek, and leave room for a future replacement. A Class Septic digs, lays and backfills the field to that permit.↗↗

Soil & terrain

Why Morgan County fields wear out the way they do

The biggest single soil unit in the Morgan County survey is Lloyd clay loam on 6 to 15 percent slopes, severely eroded, at about 54,880 acres. Lloyd is deep and well drained, but on that eroded unit the plow layer is gone and trenches start in red clay.↗↗

Hard Labor soils, a series first described in Morgan County in 1998, behave differently. They are only moderately well drained and can carry a perched water table 18 to 30 inches down from January to April. A conventional trench needs 24 inches of separation from seasonal water, so on Hard Labor ground a field that worked in August can be sitting in water in March.↗↗

Madison itself straddles a drainage divide at 691 feet, with Sugar Creek below the south side and Mill Branch running north to Hard Labor Creek. Fields on the lower ground near those branches deal with more water than fields up on the ridge.↗

Warning signs

Field-specific failure signs

These point to the trenches rather than the tank.

Seeing two or more of these? Call before it gets worse.

  • 1. Effluent surfacing in a line across the slope below the tank
  • 2. Grass over the trenches staying green through a dry Georgia August
  • 3. The tank level running high even right after it was pumped
  • 4. Wet spots that show up every late winter and dry out by summer
  • 5. A downhill trench soaked while the upper ones look dry

The Madison story

Repair the field or replace it?

Some fields are not dead, just unevenly loaded. When a distribution box settles on a slope, the lowest trench takes everything and fails first. Releveling the box or rebuilding a crushed line can bring the rest of the field back. When the soil under the trenches is clogged, though, the answer is new trench in fresh ground.

That fresh ground has to exist. DPH requires enough unobstructed land for a full replacement field, and trenches put in on 16-foot centers leave room to cut replacements between the originals. On a small farm lot that already has a barn, a well and a garden, finding that room is the real design problem.↗

Timing matters on clay. DPH says trenches in anything other than sand must not be dug wet, because the walls smear and seal. Around Madison that usually means waiting out a wet spell rather than digging the day after a storm.↗

Why does my field only act up in winter and spring?

Some Morgan County soils, including the Hard Labor series, hold a perched water table 18 to 30 inches down from January to April, which crowds a trench that needs 24 inches of dry soil beneath it.

How far does a new field have to be from my well?

At least 100 feet from wells and springs, and 50 feet from the normal water level of a lake, pond or creek.

Source: Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. r. 511-3-1-.07, Absorption Fields (LII)

Is replacing a field a repair permit or a new permit in Morgan County?

It is handled as a repair. Morgan EH's residential repair permit is $200, and the new trenches are inspected before they are covered.

Can a field go on a steep pasture?

Not over 25 percent slope unless a soil classifier's special investigation shows the limit can be overcome. Flood-prone creek bottoms should not be used at all.

Source: GA DPH Manual for On-Site Sewage Management Systems (March 2026), Section B: General Site Provisions

Can I regrade over the field once it is fixed?

Avoid it. Grading or filling that may affect an approved system voids the approval.

How much extra room does Morgan County expect for a future field?

Enough open, unobstructed land to replace the whole absorption field. Laying the first trenches on 16-foot centers lets replacement trenches go in between them later.
