The short answer

Who repairs septic systems at Harbor Club, and who permits the work?

Most Harbor Club homes run on their own septic tanks, because the community is not on Piedmont Water's sewer list. Greene County Environmental Health in Greensboro permits repairs; the residential repair permit is $200. A Class Septic replaces baffles, filters, risers, lines and failed field sections, then leaves the work open for the county inspector.↗↗↗

The Harbor Club story

Thirty years of golf, and the tanks under it

Harbor Club was laid out across 1,100 wooded acres with nine miles of shoreline, and the course was built in 1991. The first homes followed through the 1990s, which puts their tanks in the age bracket where problems pile up: concrete baffles eroded by gases, inlet lines settled out of pitch, no risers so nobody has opened the lids in years.↗↗

Many of these repairs are small if they are caught in time. A failed outlet baffle lets solids run out to the field and clog it. A missing effluent filter does the same. Fix the tank end before the field is ruined and the job stays in the hundreds rather than the thousands.↗

Every repair goes through Greene County. Georgia requires repairs, replacements and additions to be permitted and inspected, and the county's environmental health manager takes calls at 706-453-4471.↗↗

More about Harbor Club

What a sound Harbor Club tank should have

Georgia's tank rule spells out the standard a repair works back toward: two compartments with the first holding at least two-thirds of the liquid, and an approved effluent filter on the outlet. Older tanks that predate those details are where most fixes happen.↗

Pumping keeps it there. DPH's table puts a year-round 1,000-gallon tank at about 2.6 years between pump-outs for a family of four and 5.9 years for a couple, and the manual says no additive replaces pumping. Pump-outs are done by county-permitted septage haulers.↗

If you are buying or selling, the county can do a performance evaluation of an existing system on request, working from installation records, maintenance records and a look at the site.↗

Is Harbor Club on sewer?

Mostly not. Piedmont Water does not list Harbor Club among its sewer communities, and listings from a 1999 home to a 2025 build show septic tanks.

What does Greene County charge for a septic repair permit?

$200 for a residential repair and $300 for commercial, on the schedule effective August 1, 2024.

I live in Heron Ridge. Is my system a septic tank?

Listings there show a 'Commercial System' for sewer, a shared system rather than your own tank. Repairs on it belong to whoever operates that system, not to an individual owner's contractor.

Can the county evaluate my system before I sell?

Yes. County boards of health do performance evaluations of existing systems on request; Greene's residential evaluation fee is $175.

When is the best time to reach Greene Environmental Health?

Greene's septic page says specialists are in the office from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on weekdays.

Who empties the tank before a repair?

A septage hauler holding Greene County's annual removal permit, with the permit number lettered on both sides of the truck. The repair starts once the tank is open and empty.
