The short answer

What does land clearing in Greensboro, GA involve?

Clearing land around Greensboro means cutting trees and brush, grubbing stumps and disposing of debris under Greene County and state rules. Greene is not on Georgia EPD's summer burn-ban list, but land-clearing burns still need a Georgia Forestry Commission permit, and grubbing near creeks, ponds or Lake Oconee can trigger Greene's land disturbance permit.↗↗

The Greensboro story

An all-rural county where the old fields grew back

The 2020 census counted every Greene County resident as rural; none lived in an area the Census Bureau calls urban. Old fields that went back to pine and sweetgum are a typical clearing job around Greensboro: dense young timber, briars and a few big hardwoods along the fence rows worth keeping.↗

Being off the summer ban list is a real advantage here. A Greene job in July can still burn its piles with a Forestry Commission permit, while the same work a few miles west in Morgan or down in Putnam has to chip or haul until October. It doesn't make burning free: piles go well clear of the woods, and EPD's alternatives, chipping, composting or hauling to a grinding operation or inert landfill, are often the better call near a neighbor's house.↗

More about Greensboro

Wooded lake lots south of town

Down GA 44 toward Harbor Club and Reynolds, clearing is a different job. On Lake Oconee, Georgia Power prohibits mechanical clearing, grubbing or contour changes in the 25-foot buffer or on its land without written approval, and treats unauthorized clearing as grounds for dock removal and loss of lake-use permits.↗

Those lots also sit well inside Greene's 200-foot zone from state waters, so even a small clearing job on the water usually needs the county's land disturbance permit and erosion plan. We clear the house, drive and septic areas and leave the shoreline strip alone.↗
